Harvey County Clerk History

Harvey County was created from portions of Sedgwick, McPherson & Marion counties by an act of the Kansas Legislature on February 29, 1872.

After Harvey County was created by the legislature, a census of the residents was taken and sent to the Governor along with a petition to temporarily appoint three Commissioners and a County Clerk and assign the City of Newton as the county seat.

Harvey County was officially organized with the signature of Governor James Harvey on April 4, 1872.

Harvey County was named after Governor James Harvey.

The first election in Harvey County was held May 20, 1872 to elect all county officers and set the county seat as Newton.

There have been 25 County Clerks since Harvey County was organized.
